'Chalk streams are fed by groundwater. They rely on autumn and winter rainfall to recharge the aquifer and maintain flows through the year.' 'The water we use every day has to come from somewhere - using water carefully will reduce the stress on chalk stream environments.'

Environmental change and increased water demand

The rainfall pattern across the UK is changing. The past two decades have been characterised by extremes of flows, with periods of drought and high flood flows. Abstraction rates do not always adapt to the prevailing health of the river. Even in periods of extreme low flow, water is pumped out of the aquifers, putting the river under unsustainable stress.

The water abstraction should reflect prevailing conditions, especially during and after long dry periods. Both Swindon and Marlborough continue to grow. This development will increase the demand for water, and therefore, put further pressure on the Kennet catchment. ARK's objective is to monitor, lobby and ensure the long-term health of the Upper Kennet and its environment.
