Water Framework Directive River Basin Mangement Plans

ARK was asked by the RSPB to critically review the draft River Basin Mangment Plan for the River Kennet. These plans have been produced by the Environment Agency to explain how the 'Good Ecological Status' demanded by the European Water Framework Directive will be met for each River Basin. The River Kennet is in the Thames River Basin.

ARK does not think the draft River Basin Managment Plans recognised the problems facing the River Kennet, or put in place suitable measures to address those problems. Our report highlights the areas we would like to see improved in the final plan which will be published in December 2009. Public consultation on the plans is now closed.

Since the publication of the plans, ARK has been working with the Environment Agency (EA) in Thames Region to write a Catchment Management Plan for the River Kennet. We submitted our draft before Christmas and we are waiting for the EA to add their comments and publish a final version.
