From 1999 to 2004 ARK worked in partnership with Thames Water to establish a rehabilitation project on the Kennet between Mildenhall and Axford. The four stages of the rehabilitation were: New island at Axford, Demonstration Reach near Mildenhall, Causeway at Hopper's Lane and Ranunculus planting trial downstream of Axford.

Demonstration Reach, nr Mildenhall. Completed back in 1999, the success here is in the use of only natural materials, and a design working with the river's flow has helped to restore the reach's chalk stream character.

New island at Axford. The island, currently colonised by watercress, is protected from the current at its upstream and downstream ends by stone 'armouring' (stones secured into the river bed).

Causeway at Hopper's Lane. The new causeway has provided two complementary habitats: a fast flowing main channel to benefit adult wild brown trout, and a slower moving side channel to provide cover for juvenile fish and dragonflies.

Ranunculusplanting trial. Pliable hazel frames staked to the riverbed, have been successfully used to help establish water-crowfoot downstream of Axford.
