River realignment at West Overton

The river passing through Manor Farm, West Overton was artificially straightened during the late 1970's, at the same time as a new livestock bridge was built over the river.

The effect of the work was to straighten and broaden the river from the new bridge at Manor Farm most of the way down to the road bridge behind the Bell Public House at West Overton (marked on the map).

If the river were aligned to its natural course it would regain its natural chalk stream characteristics with a faster flow, naturally scoured chalk stream bed and abundant weed growth. Combined with good bank management, this would support an associated healthy wildlife population.

The Environment Agency has agreed to fund a survey of the site and the project. The landowner will fund a proportion of the cost of the realignment work and ARK is supporting him in his efforts to secure additional funding to complete the project.
