ARK provides information by: -
organising open days and educational events to help people to learn more about the river and its ecology. -
producing and selling the Map and Guide to the River Kennet (free to ARK members). -
distributing a regular newsletter.
Monitors the health of the River. Works with partner organisations like Thames Water, the Environment Agency and local landowners to improve the health of the river. Campaigns to raise the profile of the river in planning and funding decisions: -
ARK campaigned to reduce the quantity of water taken out of the river at the Public Enquiry into Abstraction at Axford in 19XX, and will fight the licence renewal in 2006. -
ARK is carefully watching the progress of the St John’s Housing project in Marlborough and will ensure that the health of the river is considered in any planning decisions. -
ARK has recently caused the Environment Agency to rewrite is consent mechanisms regarding Sewage Sludgecake Storage to protect watercourses from nutrient loaded runoff. -
ARK is supporting the case for river re-alignment in West Overton. This project will bring the river back to its natural course after it was artificially straightened many years ago. The benefits will include increased flora, fauna and fishstocks.
